Disposable Bed Pads
Disposable bed pads are products made of
superabsorbent polymers and natural fibers to absorb wetness
and provide protection on mattresses and beds.
They come in different sizes and levels of
absorbency. Some are cut in rectangular shapes in the size
of 30”X 36” while others may be square in shape measuring
30” x 30”. The choice of shape or size may depend on the
severity of incontinence or the size and weight of the
person using them. These bed pads may be used for light,
medium to heavy bedwetting. Their capacity to absorb liquids
will depend on the thickness and fluffiness of the layers of
polymers used.
Just like disposable adult diapers,
disposable bed pads have an inner layer next to the skin
which is made up of non-woven cloth-like material that
absorbs and transfers wetness to the second layer of
superabsorbent polymers and protects the skin from skin
rashes. The outer layer is made of vinyl or plastic material
that prevents leakage.
Who Would Use
Disposable Bed Pads?
They are usually used on the beds of
patients who are suffering from urine or fecal incontinence.
Incontinence and bed wetting can be a condition not only
experienced by babies but also by adults who have
uncontrollable bladder contractions and other medical
conditions that have confined them to lying on the bed most
hours of the day.
Patients recovering from major accidents and
who have been rendered non-ambulant during or even after
recovery also use disposable bed pads as they are unable to
use the bathroom by themselves, or their bedwetting may be
so severe their adult diapers may no longer be absorbent
enough. Victims of cardiovascular accidents or stroke who
have been paralyzed as a result also lie on beds covered by
disposable bed pads. The aged who are under the care of
nursing homes also use beds protected by these products. All
of these types of people use beds covered with disposable
pads to assure them of a comfortable, unencumbered sleep
despite their conditions.
Disposable bed pads are used in a variety of
situations with the purpose of shielding the mattress from
leakages and provide protection to the users from skin
rashes, bed sores and allergies that may be a consequence to
extended duration of lying hours. Prolonged use of
disposable bed pads however, may also result to skin
dryness. Adverse reactions to the use of disposable bed pads
may be resolved by applying creams and lotions that will
restore the skin’s moisture and keep it smooth and
healthy.
How To Purchase
The Appropriate Disposable Bed Pad
The market is swamped with an assortment of
disposable bed pads that it has become hard to tell which
one of them is the best. One pointer to remember when buying
a disposable bed pad is to evaluate the quality and
absorbency levels to make sure you get your money’s worth.
Many of the cheaper brands advertize heavily and pitch on
their “cheap” prices when in reality, most of them are made
of cheaper materials or inferior technology that makes them
less reliable and in the long run, more expensive to
use.
If you are concerned with the prices, you
can always browse the internet and compare quality against
costs before making an order. Choosing a pricier disposable
bed pad that has a good track record of reliability over the
years may prove to be a better investment over buying one
that costs less but may not serve the function of protecting
the bed mattress or the patient lying on it. It is also a
good idea to purchase in bulk rather than buy individual
pads to save on cost. After all, the use of these disposable
bed pads is usually long term.
